Joerg, Thanks a lot for the info ! Just bought the Elektor magazine which presently has a series of articles about the CAN bus. As the 8051 is the only uC I'm a bit familiar with I would prefer your second option : 8051 + SJA1000 + 80C250 transceiver. At a later stage I might also use an AT90S8515.
